At Bird and Johnson Oral Surgery, we offer sedation dentistry to help you feel calm, safe, and supported during your visit. Our office in Cocoa, FL provides IV sedation to reduce stress and ease discomfort for patients who struggle with anxiety, have difficulty sitting still during treatment, or are preparing for longer or more complex procedures. Whether you've delayed treatment due to anxiety or are just looking for ways to feel more at ease during oral surgery, Dr. Jay Johnson is here to provide the support and comfort you need. Schedule your consultation today to learn more about your dental sedation options.

Before your appointment, we'll review your health history, determine if IV sedation is right for your needs, and discuss what you can expect during your procedure. On the day of your oral surgery, we'll start by placing a small IV line in your arm or hand. The sedative medication takes effect quickly, creating a deep sense of relaxation. You'll remain conscious and able to respond, but you'll feel disconnected from the sensations and activity around you. Throughout your procedure, we'll monitor your breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate to ensure your safety and comfort. Afterward, you'll rest in our recovery area until you're ready to be driven home. Before you leave, our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions to guide your recovery and help you reorient yourself as the sedation wears off.

At Bird and Johnson Oral Surgery, we understand that comfort and trust go hand-in-hand. We're proud to provide IV dental sedation as an effective option for patients looking for help managing their physical and emotional well-being during oral surgery. Some of the benefits of our approach to sedation dentistry include:

  • Reduces anxiety and fear before and during treatment
  • Makes longer or more complex surgeries easier to tolerate

  • Provides a more comfortable and positive overall experience

I have had, counting this time, 2 teeth removed that 1 was cracked all the way down the tooth to root end, removed by Dr. Bird (90's)and #2 removed by Dr Johnson. (2024) I was sedated both times and when I came out of it was told all went well and to go with instructions till follow up and did this. 90's tooth was a breeze and no problems at all! Second tooth all was well( Broke tooth under Crown) with it too. Both Dr. and there are great at what they do and after listening to others people used this was a no brainer! Tech's Jessica & Ashley were real good at helping with assisting both Dr.s I had a few bone chips come through on first one ( This is normal especially if tooth is damaged bad. 2nd tooth will take longer as I am an old guy now and we heal slower. My advice is Dr. Jay A. Johnson. Professional , explains everything in detail to assure you of what will take place and the sedation was great for if you want or as with me he stated I needed to be and I totally agreed. Came out of sedation quickly and was on my way home to recuperate. Not only are they great at Oral Surgery but pricing was nearly 1/2 of what most people were charging huge $$$ for sedation. So if you need wisdom teeth or facial surgery Dr. Johnson is the man to see!

My wife is a patient of Dr. Johnson, and she absolutely loves him. He exudes self-confidence, and continually reassures his patients throughout the procedure. His assistants are very caring. I received succinct instructions following my wife’s tooth removal from one of his assistants, and she personally wheeled my wife down to the office of our dentist (in the same building), as my wife had been under sedation. She highly recommends Dr. Johnson for your oral surgery procedures.

First time getting teeth extracted. This was a painless procedure. Don’t remember a thing after sedation IV started. No pain and none the next day. Following the post surgery directions. Dr. Johnson and dental tech Ellery. We’re first class and would highly recommend this practice.

Dr. Johnson has performed tooth extractions, bone grafts, and implants for me over the past fifteen to twenty years. Despite my chronic neurological condition, he has conducted these oral surgeries under local anesthesia, causing minimal discomfort both during these procedures and during recovery. I trust that Dr. Johnson will handle each task carefully, always considering my comfort. Additionally, he is a personable man who approaches patients with kindness. His staff is friendly and knowledgeable as well. I recommend this team without hesitation.

Will I feel pain during sedation dentistry?

One of the primary benefits of sedation dentistry is minimizing discomfort during treatment. Depending on the level of sedation, patients often feel deeply relaxed or may not remember much of the procedure at all. Local anesthesia is typically used alongside sedation to ensure the treatment area remains numb.

How long does sedation dentistry take to work?

The onset of dental sedation depends on the method used, with nitrous oxide working within minutes and oral or IV sedation taking slightly longer. Your care team will monitor you closely to ensure you are fully relaxed before beginning treatment. This controlled approach helps create a calm and predictable experience.

Will I be awake during sedation dentistry?

Many patients remain conscious but deeply relaxed during sedation dentistry procedures, depending on the level of sedation used. Some forms allow you to respond to instructions while feeling at ease, while deeper sedation may leave you with little to no memory of the visit. This flexibility makes comfortable dental care possible for a wide range of needs.

If anxiety has made it difficult to schedule the care you need, IV sedation can help take the weight off your shoulders. At Bird and Johnson Oral Surgery, we're committed to supporting patients who want to feel more at ease during their procedure. If you've been putting treatment off or you're nervous about what to expect, schedule a consultation with Dr. Jay Johnson at our Cocoa, FL oral surgery practice to get the answers you need to move forward with confidence.
